How it Started

Anthony Blondin was born in France between 1801 and 1811 (the records vary.)  He came to America before 1840 (the farthest back I could trace him) and lived in Watertown, New York until the 1850s.  He then moved his wife, Mary, and 9 children to Iowa.  They settled in the Independence area where Anthony, Mary, and some of their children stayed until their deaths.  Some of their children moved to Dubuque.

Anthony was a barber.  He served in the Civil War.  It is not known who his parents were, but it's possible that Anthony was the brother or cousin of the tightrope walker, Charles Blondin.  Anthony died 30 Nov 1872 and is buried in St. John's Cemetery in Independence, Iowa.

Mary was born in France (or possibly Canada) Mar 1812.  After Anthony's death she moved in with her daughter, Margaret.  Mary died 19 Apr 1907 and is buried next to her husband in St. John's Cemetery in Independence, Iowa.
